August Full Moon Newsletter

The August edition of our email newsletter is now out. If you are not signed up and would like to be, please click "Sign up..." at the bottom of this column.

The latest Mettā Sutta materials are available to all in our Reading Room.

The ninth verse of the sutta starts with mindfulness of holding the attitude of mettā in all postures of the body, and ends in showing the relationship between sati (mindfulness) and mettā (loving kindness). In a few short lines, it reminds us that these two key qualities of practice arise together and support each other.

Laboratory of Life

The Laboratory of Life is a three-month program that attempts to find the best in the contemplative traditions and science and see their integration. It begins with reading and online discussion and ends with a three-day course at BCBS. The program has three components:

Study of pivotal classical and modern texts, from both the contemplative and scientific traditions, that have crystallized around the insights of contemplation.

Practice: Participants agree to a regular contemplative practice.

Community: Participants share their thoughts and insights with one another in an online forum.

On December 9-12, 2010,  the program concludes with three days of practice and discussion at BCBS, to share, assess and consolidate what has been learned.

The only cost to course participants is the standard fee for attending the three-day course at BCBS.
