This insight meditation course, co-sponsored by IMS and New York Insight Meditation Center, creates a space of ease and support for people of color to meditate together and cultivate inner freedom. Held in an environment of silence, it provides an in-depth experience of the Buddha’s teachings on mindful awareness, illuminating a path toward healing and greater happiness. Those without previous meditation experience are encouraged to participate.
Our wish is to make this retreat accessible to any person of color who would like to attend. We offer a ‘You Choose’ fee option, charging a minimum of just $15 per day. Those who can contribute more, however, help ensure that the community of POC meditators continues to flourish.
An optional daily period of yoga will be offered by Leslie Booker.
Free bus transportation is provided on a first-come, first-served basis between New York City and IMS. To reserve a seat, complete your registration, and then call us at 978-355-4378, ext. 0.The bus is currently full; if you request a seat we will add you to a wait list.
A Message from IMS’s Guiding Teachers
Inevitably, there'll be some noise as IMS’s project to renovate the Catskills is underway. (Its completion is currently scheduled for late August 2013.) The work, however, will take place primarily indoors during regular construction hours, usually Monday – Friday, 7:00am–4:00pm.
In the Retreat Center meditation hall, the impact of any renovation noise is further reduced by an air circulation and conditioning system that allows fresh air to move around without opening the windows.
The teachers at IMS decided to continue offering retreats throughout this building period, knowing that conditions for practice are rarely perfect. We trust that these particular conditions can be met with the equanimity and grace with which we meet a range of conditions in our lives.
All of us at IMS look forward to supporting you on retreat.
Gina Sharpe co-founded New York Insight Meditation Center where she serves as guiding teacher. Since 1995, she has taught around the US, including at a maximum security prison for women. She is particularly inspired by the dharma’s potential to transform and illuminate interpersonal and multicultural relations.
Sharon Salzberg, a co-founder of IMS and BCBS, has practiced meditation since 1971 and has been teaching worldwide since 1974. She is an IMS guiding teacher and author of Real Happiness, Faith, Lovingkindness and other publications.
