September 10 - September 13, 2009 (Thursday to Sunday)

This retreat, specifically for caregivers, therapists and health care workers, is an opportunity to rediscover the resiliency of the human spirit. For many, overwhelm and stress have become all too common: what was once a vital, regenerative form of giving or service has turned into a depleting activity, often filled with distress.

Balance of heart and mind is key to sustaining ourselves, especially in the face of daily suffering. Through the practice of meditation, three essential skills that cultivate equanimity are developed - concentration, mindfulness and compassion. This course will teach us these skills and move us towards deeper care, both for ourselves and for others.

The format will include guided meditations, talks and Q&A sessions led by the teachers, together with periods of silence (including during meals) and optional daily yoga. Although much of the culture and atmosphere at IMS reflects the Buddhist meditative tradition, this retreat is non-sectarian and does not require an adherence to Buddhism or any adaptation of personal faith.

5 CEs are available for nurses. 10 CEs are available for Psychologists and Licensed Mental Health Counselors.

Please note that IMS's sliding scale fee structure covers accommodations and meals only. As is customary here, the teachings are freely offered by the course leaders, who do not receive compensation. Instead, participants are invited to support the teachers via a donation at the end of the retreat.

A modest number of scholarships are available by application and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

This retreat is co-sponsored by IMS, the Home Care Alliance of Massachusetts and Fazzi Associates.
